Without a clue as to how long Belal was going to wait for them, Gabriel and the others rushed down to Steel Ideal.

Gabriel had no real idea if Lerough was truly the best armor smith in Draskel Citadel or not. He only had the man’s word to go on that the warmaster himself had his armor made by him—I really should have asked Varris if that was true. What Gabriel did have was the debt of a father whose daughter he and his people saved. If anyone in the citadel was going to make good and damn sure they did a good job at building Gabriel’s armor and not try to rip off the warmaster, it was Lerough.

“Gabriel!” Risit called out the moment they stepped through the door. She hopped off the counter and ran over to him.

“Risit!” Gabriel scooped up the little Ishgallian girl in his arms and hugged her tight. “How’re you doing?”

“Good! Mama says that if you’re okay we can spar in the training yards,” she said with a big nod. “So get ready to get your butt kicked.”

Eskel stood behind the counter, shaking her head with a faint smile. “I said nothing about kicking anyone’s butts, Risit. Only that you could spar if he wished.”

“But I could,” Risit insisted.

Gabriel laughed and pulled Risit up to sit on his shoulders. She may have been far larger than a normal human child of her age, but she was still just a kid. “Working the forge here now?”

“Sometimes,” Eskel said. “Steel Ideal is not known for its weapons, so it is rare that customers come looking for my services. I mostly work the counter and hope someone comes looking for me.”

Risit leaned over Gabriel’s head. “I’m going to run around and spread the word about Mama’s weapons. But we have to spar first!”

“She’s too cute,” Nicole sent over their comms with a not-so-subtle squeal to her voice.

“You realize you broadcast this to all of us, do you not?” Alexander replied over comms.

“I said what I said,” Nicole shot back.

Gabriel ignored their exchange and smiled at Eskel. “Oh, I’m sure you’ll have your hands full in no time. Especially after they hear the head of Clan Iron Wolf used your blade to save Draskel Citadel.”

Eskel’s smile fell flat. “Then they are coming. The devourers.”

Gabriel pulled Risit off his shoulders and sat her on the counter. “They are. In seven days.” He turned to the young Ishgallian girl. “So our little sparring match is going to have to wait.”

“Aww,” Risit whined.

“Where are we supposed to go?” Eskel asked. “If the citadel falls there will be nowhere left for the clans to run.”

Gabriel pulled out the scroll Varris had given them and slid it across the counter. “That’s why we’re here. If we’re going to stop the devohrahn, Alexander and I need armor. The warmaster has agreed to cover our bill, so tell your father he doesn’t have to hold back on the quality if he can get it done within the week.
